Our Story

Beterra is a global healthcare safety, quality, and staff feedback measurement company. We currently work across eight countries, empowering healthcare leaders and frontline staff through culture assessments, improvement tools, and caregiver support programs.

Beterra began as a spin-off of Synensys, a global patient safety, and quality improvement consulting firm in 2010. Since then, three hundred facilities are using our solutions. We exist to simplify the collection, analysis, and use of data and support tools to accelerate improvement.

Kapil Nair
Kapil Nair, CEO

Kapil loves empowering healthcare leaders through innovation. Before co-founding Beterra, Kapil worked at Cerner Corporation, a Fortune 500 company where he co-founded the Bear Institute for Pediatric Innovation, the nation’s first pediatric healthcare IT innovation institute.

Daniel Baily, Chief Product Officer

Daniel is passionate about making improvement simplefor healthcare professionals. He focuses on product strategy and client value at Beterra. Daniel led the Analytics Practice at Synensys Global, a global patient safety consulting firm, before co-founding Beterra. He is an international speaker and consultant focused on improving patient safety.

Mike Heckman
Mike Heckman, President

At Beterra, Mike focuses on growth, client service, and business strategy. Mike is committed to advancing healthcare innovation. Mike has a BS from Truman State University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Mike resides in Parkville, MO, with his wife and three children. He is an avid Chiefs fan and enjoys camping and riding motorcycles.

Susan Scott, PhD, RN, FAAN, Practice Leader

Dr. Scott guides Beterra’s clients on implementing institutional support programs. Sue’s research and implementation interest involve developing institutional support networks to address clinician support in the aftermath of emotionally challenging events. Her research has defined the second victim phenomenon allowing for the design and deployment of the ‘first of its kind’ peer support network, the for YOU Team. Sue also works as a Nurse Scientist at the University of Missouri Health Care.

Lyla Parry, Sr. Program Leader

Lyla leads the coordination, implementation, and execution of Beterra’s quality and safety solutions for healthcare organizations worldwide. She is driven in her efforts to support our clients in patient safety improvement plans. Previously, Lyla was the project manager for the Analytics Practice at Synensys Global, a global patient safety consulting firm, and led their federal system services implementation programs.
